PEN BEAM / TOOL NOTE
GitHub: What it is and when to use it.
Version control, code review and deployment coordination for custom themes, scripts and reusable code.
What GitHub is best for
Version control, code review and deployment workflows for custom themes and scripts. Useful for tracking changes, reviewing proposed edits, documenting issues and retaining the history needed to understand why a customization exists. It is a strong home for source files, reviewable changes, issues and release history when a team needs to understand what changed and why. Small, focused repositories are easier to maintain than a collection of anonymous snippets.
Limitations and trade-offs
Requires Git literacy; it is not a content management interface for non-technical editors. Repository hygiene is required to avoid a dumping ground for undocumented snippets. Secrets must never be committed; access permissions, branch protection, dependency updates and backup expectations should be defined. Git history is only useful when commits, branches, access and release procedures are maintained. Secrets must not be committed, and repository access alone does not make a deployment safe; build steps, environment differences and rollback must also be understood.
How Pen Beam uses it
Pen Beam uses GitHub to manage custom WordPress themes, snippet libraries and deployment checklists. Changes are scoped, reviewed and tested before release, while readme notes explain dependencies, configuration and rollback steps without exposing credentials. We keep custom theme code and deployment checklists under version control, review changes before merging and record a release point that can be restored. Client handover identifies repository ownership, required secrets management and the process for deploying a tested change.
