PEN BEAM / TOOL NOTE
WordPress: What it is and when to use it.
Maintainable content publishing with a mature plugin ecosystem and a publishing workflow non-technical editors can operate.
What WordPress is best for
Maintainable content publishing with a large plugin ecosystem and strong community support. Suitable for sites where non-technical editors need to publish without developer involvement. It works especially well when content types, page hierarchy and editing responsibilities are documented before custom templates are built. It is especially useful when page types, publishing responsibilities, media handling and editorial approvals are defined rather than left to a growing pile of unrelated plugins.
Limitations and trade-offs
Plugin conflicts, update risk and performance variability depending on hosting. Requires ongoing maintenance discipline. A popular theme does not guarantee maintainability; template structure, release testing, content modelling and documentation matter more. Hosting, premium plugins, specialist development and maintenance may cost money even though WordPress software is free. Before choosing extensions, document which feature owns each responsibility and test updates on staging. A migration plan, maintained backup and clear administrator roles matter more than the number of available themes.
How Pen Beam uses it
Pen Beam uses WordPress for custom themes, block-editor templates and lightweight admin workflows for content-driven sites. Handover documents which fields control layout, which dependencies are required, how updates are staged and how an owner restores a working version. Handover includes a map of templates, editable fields, key plugins, backup and update procedures, and a short guide for routine publishing. Custom code is documented so a future maintainer can understand why a decision was made.
