PEN BEAM / TOOL NOTE
Figma: What it is and when to use it.
Collaborative interface design, design systems and inspectable handoff details before browser implementation.
What Figma is best for
Collaborative interface design, design systems and developer handoff with inspectable spacing and type tokens. Useful for exploring page hierarchy and component states before a WordPress template is implemented. It helps teams agree on information hierarchy and repeatable visual decisions before implementation. Shared components and named spacing and type tokens can reduce ambiguity during design review and developer handoff.
Limitations and trade-offs
Design files are not a substitute for responsive testing in the browser. Handoff requires discipline to avoid drift between design and implementation. Components can become inconsistent if variants and design tokens are not maintained; accessibility, content length, performance and real-device behavior must still be tested in the finished interface. A polished canvas cannot show every real browser, assistive-technology or content-length issue. Components can drift from the live product if changes are not reviewed, and handoff notes alone do not replace testing with realistic copy and devices.
How Pen Beam uses it
Pen Beam uses Figma for layout exploration and design tokens before building WordPress templates. The handoff records spacing, typography, responsive behavior and interaction states, then validates the result in a browser with real content instead of treating the mock-up as proof of production behavior. We use design files to compare layout options, define a small set of design tokens and discuss interactions before building WordPress templates. The browser implementation is then checked at narrow, medium and wide widths, including keyboard focus and reduced-motion behavior.
